Every small team eventually asks the same question: which free project management tool will we actually outgrow last? Here’s how Trello, Asana, and ClickUp’s free tiers really compare.
Trello: simple, but capped at 10 boards
Trello’s free plan gives you unlimited cards and unlimited members, plus a basic amount of Butler automation each month. The real constraint is the 10-board-per-workspace cap — fine for one team, tight once you’re running several projects in parallel.
ClickUp: the broadest free tier, limited by storage
ClickUp removes the two limits people hit first on Trello: it allows unlimited members and unlimited tasks across unlimited lists on its free tier. The tradeoff is storage — ClickUp’s free plan caps total file storage well below what Trello or Asana allow, so it suits teams that work mostly in text and tasks rather than heavy file attachments.
Asana: unlimited projects, but tighter on seats
Asana’s free Personal plan allows unlimited projects with no board-count ceiling, but it has recently tightened the number of free seats available to new signups, and the free tier lacks timeline views and automation. It’s a reasonable fit for a very small team that mainly needs list-based task tracking.
Which should you pick?
- Trello — easiest to learn, best for one or two active projects at a time.
- ClickUp — best if your team is bigger than storage-heavy, since member/task limits are the most generous.
- Asana — workable for very small teams, but check current seat limits before onboarding more than a couple of people.
All three vendors update free-tier limits fairly often — confirm current seat and storage caps on each product’s own pricing page before switching your team over.
